Ping? Is Anyone There?

Last week, during a press conference, Apple premiered a new social networking platform with the launch of iTunes Ping. Ping is Apple’s first attempt at providing users with a social experience throughout iTunes and the music-buying experience. It is not built on top of Facebook, it does not integrate with Twitter, it is Apple built for Apple. Ping is the most noticeable addition to iTunes 10 other than the infamous change to the familiar iTunes logo. It attempts to be a shift in online shopping, one that validates social media for a retail brand.

Social Search Optimization Revisited

A search engine’s ultimate mission is to serve the most relevant information it can. But from a search perspective, the emergence of social media has essentially expanded what’s relevant. While many refer to this subject matter as social media optimization (SMO), I prefer social search optimization due to the specificity.
